HUDDLED MASSES: A Fundraiser for Immigrants & Refugees

April 12, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Activism-based nail polish brand Claws Out presents Huddled Masses at The Hoxton Hotel—an evening of designers celebrating diversity in Portland. Join us in shining a light on the immigrant experience through interactive installations and a one-night-only market featuring goods from local POC-owned companies. Exhibitors include fashion designer Myriam Marcela showing her intricate Wild Woman wearable art collection embroidered by artist Laura Renée Maier, live letterpressing by Letra Chueca press, and an immersive storytelling experience from some members of Portland’s immigrant community thanks to Digital One sound studio. With your help, Claws Out (in conjunction with nail artist Amber Bates and photographer Christopher Dibble) aim to create a massive reimagining of the Statue of Liberty’s New Colossus poem one nail at a time. Enjoy a drink from the bar and make some new friends in the design community. 100% of profits for the evening go to The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) who help immigrants and refugees become self-sufficient in their new communities by providing employment training, language services, and youth mentorship programs.

The night’s programming includes

  • First hand stories from IRCO community members including 8th-grader Nam on coming to America as a child and Samsam on her experience leaving her home in Somalia due to civil war with sound design by Digital One.
  • Mexican-American designer Myriam Marcela displaying her stunning Wild Women collection: A line of women’s wearable art intricately embroidered by artist Laura Renée Maier with faces of women from around the world “created in celebration of the diversity, strength, and identity of the Wild Women in all of us.”
  • Letra Chueca, a Latinx-owned letterpress company devoted to decolonizing design through collaboration and representation who will be on site helping guests print powerful take away pieces.
  • A one-night-only market with local POC-owned companies like Vía RaízMinnie & George, and ReSista Kat.
  • Representatives from IRCO will be on hand to share their 43 years of experience integrating thousands of refugees, immigrants, and the community at large into a self-sufficient, healthy and inclusive multi-ethnic society.
  • Event organizers Claws Out have teamed with accomplished nail artist Amber Bates and photographer Christopher Dibble to create a multi-person visual reimagining of The New Colossus poem one word at a time on guest’s nails, visually projecting each one until the poem is completed.
  • No host bar by the Hoxton and DJ Komba Weekend spinning cumbia music.

Event is all ages.
