Staged Reading: That Morning in Lampedusa (not hosted by GlobalPDX)

February 17, 2018 @ 6:00 am - 7:30 am

“Having floated for at least two days in the choppy Mediterranean Sea to
reach Europe, a rickety trawler overstuffed with African migrants fleeing
war and poverty was nearing a Sicilian island, not even a quarter-mile
away.” (New York Times)

The heart-breaking sea journey of African refugees is the subject of this staged
reading from Portland State University’s Department of World Languages &
Literatures. For the first time, this award-winning script comes to Portland, after
having been performed over 300 times in Europe. The reading vividly brings to
life the journey, the reactions of the rescuers and the lives of the surviving
refugees.

Antonio Umberto Riccò, formed the community outreach group “Unser Herz schlägt auf
Lampedusa” in Germany in 2013 to remember the victims, to support the work of
volunteers, and to pay homage to Lampedusa and its inhabitants. The group interviewed
survivors and rescuers to learn more about that morning, and how the inhabitants,
tourists, and the police reacted. The text is written by Antonio Umberto Riccò.
